The Hongkong Prize is an prestigious award that acknowledges scientists and research teams from Hong Kong that have made outstanding contributions in terms of scientific innovation and transformation, while creating positive social impacts. It is a non-governmental merit-based award sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited and organized by Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation. The Board of Review Committee and Compliance Oversight Team is charged with making decisions regarding the HK Prize, such as suggesting research fields worthy of consideration, appointing members of Review Committee and Compliance Oversight Team, setting requirements on nominating experts, verifying final review results and holding an awards ceremony.
The Hong Kong Research Award Prize is open to research teams from universities in Hong Kong as well as research-related institutions established by Hong Kong higher education institutions, with an award fund totalling HK$2 Million. There are five award fields: Artificial Intelligence & Robotics; Life and Health; New Materials and Energy; Advanced Manufacturing; FinTech. Up to five persons or teams may win this annual prize.
G3 Alliance (centrum Charitas Foundation, Hongkong Polytechnic University and Council of Hong Kong Laureate Forum) joined forces in 2018 to inspire young people’s passion for scientific research and problem-solving by initiating the Young STEAM Talent Award(Shao Nian Chuang Ke Da Ren Da Jiang). This exciting initiative seeks out outstanding students with a deep sense of creativity who desire to make an impactful difference within society through creative endeavors.
This year’s Hong Kong Local Math Academy competition attracted over 70 teams from nearly 50 secondary schools in Hong Kong. Working under teacher supervision, each team selected an appropriate mathematics topic, conducted research, and submitted a research report. A panel of expert judges evaluated these reports; teams chosen for further advancement to the Oral Defense stage presented their work before an Oral Defense committee and presented an oral defense presentation before them.
At this event, Adriel CHAN, Vice Chairman of Hang Lung Properties moderated an engaging fireside chat session between Dr Owen H. KO, 2004 HLMA winner and Assistant Dean (Research) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Medicine; and Ms Ewina PUN (2012) who is now Doctoral Candidate at Brown University. Both of them shared their insights into how mathematics is shaping our world today.
The Faculty of Humanities at Hong Kong Polytechnic University is delighted to be the initiator and host of the Yuen Ren Chao Prize with generous permission from Professor Chao’s family. With this award, its purpose is to foster synergies across languages, history, culture and communication in research and education; its scholars carry forward his legacy with research in language science, focusing specifically on Chinese linguistics, English language communication and bilingualism – among its achievements is producing numerous world-leading scholars.
