Data Sgp is an interactive tool that enables users to visualize and analyze growth data from across their state. Teachers, school administrators and district leaders can utilize this data to assess which students are developing fastest in specific content areas as well as which strategies might work to increase student performance.
The tool allows users to view both individual student SGPs as well as school-wide aggregate data, and assist educators in identifying any potential issues with student performance. SGP data takes into account several factors including prior achievement levels, grade level, subject area as well as student and teacher characteristics that affect growth.
SGPs are calculated based on trends in statewide performance data each year and therefore differences can be misleading between years. For instance, an individual student might have increased his or her academic skills in 2024 but due to Covid-19 pandemic conditions in that year average SGPs across the state experienced a slight dip.
Changes to students’ SGPs between years should be handled with caution, even among classmates in the same class. Even students with identical MCAS scaled score histories could have different SGPs; SGPs are determined by comparing current scores against academic peer groups from previous MCAS administrations.
Assuming Simon scored 300 on this year’s sixth grade MCAS test, their SGP will consist of all students who earned similar scores on last year’s fifth-grade MCAS exam; this can encompass up to five years’ worth of past MCAS scores.
The SGPdata package offers two sets of data in WIDE and LONG formats, respectively. Lower level SGP functions (studentGrowthPercentiles and studentGrowthProjections) use WIDE data while the higher-level wrapper functions (sgpData_INSTRUCTOR_NUMBER and sgpData_CONTENT_AREA) require the LONG data set; typically for analysis it offers several preparation and storage benefits over its WIDE counterpart.
SGPdata was designed to be as user-friendly and intuitive as possible, yet there’s still a lot of information for you to process.
